#NOLAZINE - Before his untimely death in 2000, Big Pun had already made hip-hop history as the first solo Latino rapper to earn a platinum album in the United States.

Born Christopher Lee Rios on November 10, 1971, in the Bronx, New York, Big Pun developed a reputation as one of the most technically gifted lyricists in hip-hop. His rapid-fire delivery, complex rhyme patterns, and incredible wordplay separated him from many of his peers.

His career took a major turn when fellow Bronx rapper Fat Joe recognized his talent and helped introduce him to a larger audience. Pun eventually became a central figure in Terror Squad, helping bring greater recognition to Latino artists in mainstream hip-hop.

In 1998, Big Pun released his groundbreaking debut album, Capital Punishment, featuring classic records such as “Still Not a Player,” “Beware,” “Twinz (Deep Cover 98),” and “You Ain't a Killer.”

The album became a commercial success, earning platinum certification and establishing Pun as one of the most respected MCs of his generation.

Unfortunately, behind his success, Pun struggled with serious weight-related health problems. On February 7, 2000, he suffered a fatal heart attack and died at just 28 years old.

Only two months later, his second album, Yeeeah Baby, was released posthumously, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Although his mainstream career lasted only a few years, Big Pun left behind a powerful legacy. His lyrical ability, commercial achievements, and contributions to Latino representation helped change hip-hop history.

More than 25 years after his passing, fans and fellow artists continue recognizing him as one of the greatest lyricists to ever touch a microphone.

Do you think Big Pun would have become one of the biggest rappers of the 2000s if he had lived? And is he one of the top 10 greatest lyricists in hip-hop history?
