#NOLAZINE - During the golden era of Motown, Tammi Terrell and The Temptations' lead singer David Ruffin were involved in one of the music industry's most troubled relationships.

In 1966, Terrell began dating Ruffin, whose powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence had made him one of Motown's biggest stars. Their romance reportedly became serious enough that Ruffin proposed marriage.

According to accounts of their relationship, Terrell proudly announced their engagement during a live performance, only to later discover that Ruffin was already married and had children.

What initially appeared to be a beautiful love story reportedly turned into a painful relationship marked by betrayal and allegations of abuse.

Despite the personal struggles she experienced, Terrell continued building an extraordinary music career alongside Marvin Gaye. Together, they recorded timeless Motown classics including “Ain't No Mountain High Enough,” “Your Precious Love,” and “Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing.”

Sadly, Terrell's life was cut short when she died in 1970 at just 24 years old following complications from a brain tumor.

Although her life was brief, her beautiful voice and contributions to soul music continue inspiring generations of artists.

Do you think Tammi Terrell receives enough recognition for her contributions to Motown? And is her musical partnership with Marvin Gaye one of the greatest duos in R&B history?
