#NOLAZINE - During the early 1990s, Richard Pena became one of the most notorious figures associated with New Orleans' underground drug trade. Operating out of the Westbank, Pena reportedly built a massive cocaine distribution network with connections stretching from Houston and Miami to Mexico.

At the height of his operation, Pena was reportedly responsible for moving hundreds of kilograms of cocaine into the New Orleans area each month. His criminal network also became linked to corruption within law enforcement, with officers accused of protecting drug operations in exchange for money.

But Pena's influence allegedly extended beyond the streets and into the music industry, where he became associated with record labels, music businesses, and individuals connected to the growing Southern hip-hop movement.

His name has also been linked to New Orleans rap duo Kane & Abel, who later gained national recognition through Master P's No Limit Records. The brothers eventually faced their own federal drug-related legal troubles.

Pena's criminal empire ultimately collapsed following a major federal investigation that exposed drug trafficking and corruption involving numerous associates, including law enforcement officers. He was sentenced to life in prison.

His story remains one of the darker chapters in New Orleans crime history, highlighting how drug trafficking, police corruption, and the entertainment industry became intertwined during a turbulent period in the city's past.

Do y'all remember hearing stories about Richard Pena? And do you think his story is one of the most notorious in New Orleans criminal history?
