#NOLAZINE - King Von’s career lasted only a few years, but his voice left a lasting impression on hip-hop. Born Dayvon Daquan Bennett on August 9, 1994, the Chicago rapper transformed his difficult experiences into detailed songs that made listeners feel like they were watching movies.

Von was more than another rapper emerging from Chicago’s drill scene. His ability to create characters, build suspense and describe complicated situations made him one of his generation’s most captivating storytellers.

Coming out of Chicago

King Von grew up in Parkway Gardens, the South Side Chicago community commonly known as O’Block. His early life was affected by poverty, violence, legal problems and the loss of people close to him.

After spending time incarcerated, Von began taking music seriously. His childhood friend Lil Durk recognized his potential and signed him to Only the Family.

Von did not need years to find his identity as an artist. From his earliest releases, he sounded confident, direct and completely comfortable telling stories drawn from the world around him.

“Crazy Story” changed everything

King Von’s breakthrough arrived with “Crazy Story” in 2018. Instead of creating a traditional rap song, Von delivered a tense street narrative filled with dialogue, characters and unexpected developments.

His delivery made every line feel immediate. He changed his voice while portraying different people and carefully moved the story forward without losing the listener’s attention.

The song introduced Von to a national audience and eventually inspired additional chapters. It also established the storytelling formula that became his signature.

Critics quickly recognized his unusual ability to turn Chicago experiences into structured narratives. Pitchfork highlighted how easily Von inserted characters and dialogue into his verses.

Building momentum

Von followed his breakthrough with the 2019 mixtape Grandson, Vol. 1. The project helped prove that “Crazy Story” was not a one-time moment.

In March 2020, he released Levon James, featuring appearances from Lil Durk, G Herbo, Tee Grizzley, YNW Melly and NLE Choppa. Songs such as “Took Her to the O” pushed his storytelling style to an even larger audience.

“Took Her to the O” became one of Von’s most successful records. Like “Crazy Story,” the song demonstrated his ability to make every detail feel visual. Listeners did not simply hear Von rap—they could imagine the locations, conversations and characters he described.

His music was often dark because it reflected a world filled with real danger and loss. However, Von also displayed humor, charisma and loyalty in his songs and interviews.

Welcome to O’Block

King Von released his debut studio album, Welcome to O’Block, on October 30, 2020. The project represented his most complete body of work and showed how quickly he was developing as an artist.

The album included “Armed & Dangerous,” “How It Go,” “All These N****s” and “The Code.” Guest appearances came from Lil Durk, Polo G, Moneybagg Yo and Fivio Foreign.

Von used the album to introduce listeners to the environment that shaped him. He described the consequences of street life while also showing the relationships, survival instincts and emotional conflicts existing inside his community.

The album later reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200, demonstrating how much his audience continued growing after his death.

A promising life cut short

On November 6, 2020—only one week after releasing Welcome to O’Block—King Von was fatally shot following an altercation outside the Monaco Hookah Lounge in Atlanta.

He was only 26 years old.

News of his death traveled quickly throughout the music industry. Lil Durk, Chance the Rapper, YG and countless artists and fans publicly mourned him. Contemporary reports documented the tributes that followed his death.

Von’s death was another painful reminder of how frequently hip-hop loses young artists before they have an opportunity to reach their full potential.

His music continued reaching new listeners

Von left behind a large collection of unreleased recordings. His first posthumous album, What It Means to Be King, arrived in 2022 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

Another album, Grandson, followed in 2023. These releases allowed his family, friends and fans to continue hearing the music he created before his death.

Records such as “Crazy Story,” “Took Her to the O” and “Still Trappin’” remain popular, while younger artists continue studying his storytelling and delivery.
