#NOLAZINE - On August 3, 1995, the Source Awards brought hip-hop’s biggest stars together in New York City. Instead of being remembered only for music, the ceremony became a turning point in the growing rivalry between the East and West Coasts.

While accepting an award for Death Row Records, Suge Knight delivered a speech that appeared to target Bad Boy Records founder Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. Without mentioning him by name, Knight invited artists who did not want their executive producer appearing in their videos, dancing or speaking on their records to join Death Row.

The audience immediately understood the reference. Puff Daddy was famous for appearing in Bad Boy’s videos and adding vocals to his artists’ songs. Knight’s remarks received a hostile reaction from the heavily East Coast crowd and transformed private competition between two powerful labels into a public confrontation. Billboard later described the speech as a direct shot at Combs’ highly visible role.

Tension continued when Snoop Dogg questioned whether the East Coast had love for him, Dr. Dre and Death Row. Earlier that evening, Outkast had been booed before André 3000 responded with his historic declaration that the South had something to say.

Puff later attempted to promote unity between the regions during his own appearance. However, Suge Knight’s speech had already created one of the most unforgettable moments in hip-hop history.

The 1995 Source Awards did not create every conflict between Death Row and Bad Boy, but it placed their rivalry on a national stage and symbolized how competitive—and dangerous—the music industry was becoming.
