#NOLAZINE - For decades, some of the biggest names in luxury fashion have built global businesses around premium materials, exclusivity, craftsmanship, and heritage. Now, one Black family in Texas is working to build a luxury legacy of its own.

Lawrence Willis, a Louisiana native and longtime entrepreneur in the alligator industry, is the founder and CEO of Willis & Co. (@williswearco), a Black family-owned luxury company based in Pearland, Texas.

But Willis & Co. isn’t being built as just another fashion label.

Alongside his wife, daughter, and son-in-law, Willis is developing a family-owned and controlled luxury house with ambitions of creating something that can be passed down from one generation to the next.

From Supplying Luxury to Building It

Willis’ journey into luxury began long before his family’s name appeared on handbags, belts and other finished products.

For years, he worked in the American alligator industry, supplying premium skins that eventually found their way into high-end luxury goods.

That experience gave Willis an up-close look at the value of exotic materials and the enormous difference between supplying a raw material and controlling the finished product, brand and customer experience.

Eventually, one question changed the direction of the business:

Why continue providing valuable materials for other luxury companies when his own family had the knowledge and experience to create a luxury brand themselves?

That realization helped lead to Willis & Co.

Instead of remaining solely on the supply side of the industry, the family began focusing on building products and, more importantly, building a name that could carry value for generations.

Creating a Black-Owned Luxury House

Today, Willis & Co. develops handcrafted luxury products including handbags, wallets, belts, briefcases, travel pieces, furniture and other specialty items.

The company works with materials including American alligator, buffalo leather and premium cowhide, combining those materials with a focus on craftsmanship and distinctive design.

But the larger story behind Willis & Co. is ownership.

Luxury brands are often built around heritage. Some of the world’s most recognizable fashion houses have spent generations turning family names into global symbols of quality and status.

Willis and his family are attempting to build their own version of that legacy from Texas.

Rather than simply creating products for the current marketplace, the vision is to establish an independent luxury house that can remain under family ownership and eventually be passed down to future generations.

A Louisiana Foundation With a Texas Home

Although Willis & Co. is headquartered in Pearland, Texas, Lawrence Willis’ Louisiana roots remain an important part of the company’s story.

Louisiana has a deep connection to the American alligator industry, making Willis’ background especially relevant as the family develops a luxury company centered partly around American alligator products.

That Southern foundation also gives Willis & Co. an identity that differs from the European heritage traditionally associated with luxury fashion.

The family is positioning its products around an idea of American luxury—one influenced by Southern craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and family legacy.

Chasing a Piece of a Massive Global Industry

The opportunity is significant.

The global luxury goods business represents hundreds of billions of dollars in consumer spending, with established fashion houses competing for customers around the world.

For an independent Black-owned company, breaking into that space means competing not only on product quality but also on branding, distribution, storytelling, exclusivity and customer experience.

Willis & Co. enters that challenge with something difficult to manufacture: firsthand experience with one of the premium materials used throughout the luxury industry.

The company is now attempting to transform that knowledge into greater ownership across the value chain—from understanding the materials to creating the finished products and building the brand behind them.

More Than a Fashion Brand

Perhaps the most important part of the Willis & Co. story is that the company isn’t centered around one person.

It is a family operation.

Lawrence Willis is building alongside his wife, daughter and son-in-law, creating an opportunity for the knowledge, relationships and business infrastructure developed today to remain within the family tomorrow.

That makes Willis & Co. about more than selling luxury handbags or alligator belts.

It’s about ownership.

It’s about turning industry experience into intellectual property, products and a recognizable family name.

And it’s about creating something future generations won’t necessarily have to start from scratch to inherit.

As Willis & Co. continues establishing itself from Pearland, the family is pursuing an ambitious goal: taking generations of Southern craftsmanship and experience with premium materials and turning them into a Black-owned American luxury house capable of earning its place in the global designer market.

For Lawrence Willis and his family, the next chapter isn’t simply about supplying luxury.

It’s about owning the brand.
