#NOLAZINE - During the early 2000s, Southern hip-hop was taking over the music industry, and Atlanta rap duo YoungBloodZ, consisting of Sean Paul and J-Bo, found themselves at the center of that movement with their breakout hit “Damn!”

Released in 2003 as the lead single from their second studio album, Drankin' Patnaz, the record featured Atlanta producer and rapper Lil Jon, whose signature crunk sound helped transform the song into a nationwide anthem.

Before “Damn!” became a hit, YoungBloodZ had already established themselves in Atlanta's growing hip-hop scene. However, teaming up with Lil Jon introduced their music to an even larger audience. His explosive production, aggressive energy, and unforgettable ad-libs gave the record a sound that was impossible to ignore in clubs and on radio stations.

The collaboration proved to be a major success. “Damn!” climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming YoungBloodZ's biggest mainstream hit and helping solidify their place in Southern hip-hop history.

The song arrived during a period when Atlanta artists were changing the direction of mainstream rap. Lil Jon's crunk movement was gaining national attention, and YoungBloodZ benefited from being part of that cultural shift.

More than two decades later, “Damn!” remains one of the most recognizable Southern rap records of the early 2000s. Its success demonstrated how the right collaboration, production, and timing could take an established regional act to national stardom.

For YoungBloodZ, “Damn!” wasn't just another hit record—it became the defining song of their career and a lasting piece of Atlanta hip-hop history.
