#NOLAZINE - In 1998, two of R&B's biggest young stars, Brandy and Monica, joined forces to release one of the most unforgettable duets in music history, “The Boy Is Mine.” But what started as a fictional story about two women fighting over the same man eventually became surrounded by rumors of a real-life rivalry.

Inspired by the concept of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's 1982 duet “The Girl Is Mine,” Brandy helped develop a song about two women confronting each other over a man they both believed belonged to them.

At the time, both singers were experiencing tremendous success in their solo careers. Brandy had become a household name through her music and television series Moesha, while Monica had established herself as one of R&B's most powerful young voices.

Their collaboration was supposed to be a celebration of two talented artists, but rumors of tension between the singers quickly became part of the song's story.

The drama reportedly reached a boiling point during preparations for the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Monica later acknowledged that she physically struck Brandy during a backstage confrontation, confirming that their relationship had experienced real tension.

Despite the behind-the-scenes controversy, “The Boy Is Mine” became a massive commercial success. The record spent 13 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the biggest hits of 1998.

The song also earned Brandy and Monica a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Over the years, both women have spoken about their complicated relationship and eventually moved beyond their earlier disagreements. In 2020, they reunited for a highly anticipated Verzuz celebration, reminding fans of their contributions to R&B history.

More than two decades later, “The Boy Is Mine” remains one of the greatest female R&B collaborations ever recorded.

What makes the story so fascinating is that a song built around a fictional romantic rivalry became connected to an actual conflict between the two singers.

NOLAZINE WANTS TO KNOW: Who had the better verse on “The Boy Is Mine,” Brandy or Monica? And do you think their rumored rivalry helped make the song even bigger?
