In a recent sit-down with Nolazine, New Orleans rapper and activist Dee-1 delivered a powerful and thought-provoking conversation that delved deep into his personal journey, his philosophy on hip-hop, and his unwavering commitment to purpose-driven art. Reflecting on his early music career, Dee-1 revisited the controversy surrounding his track “J50 & Weezy”—a bold critique of mainstream rappers’ influence on youth while he was a teacher in Baton Rouge. With this project, he’s calling for evolution—urging both artists and listeners to aim for maturity, growth, and truth.

One standout track from the project, “OGs vs DGs”, will tackle the generational divide in hip-hop and call out artists who’ve failed to evolve after decades in the game. For Dee-1, the message is clear: real “gangsta” energy is about upliftment, responsibility, and faith.
