#NOLAZINE - New Orleans has always been home to artists who refuse to follow the crowd, and Neno Calvin is a perfect example. For more than a decade, the Magnolia Projects native has built his career on consistency, authenticity and a determination to succeed on his own terms. Along the way, he has developed a loyal cult following that continues to support his music year after year.

Before stepping in front of the camera as a rapper, Neno Calvin spent time behind it, shooting music videos for his friends. However, once he decided to take his own music career seriously, the city of New Orleans quickly began paying attention.

Coming from the historic Magnolia Projects carries a powerful musical legacy. The neighborhood has produced respected artists such as Juvenile, Turk, Jay Electronica and the late Soulja Slim. Despite coming from an area filled with legendary names, Neno never allowed himself to get lost in anyone else’s shadow. He created his own lane, held his own and carved his name into the wall as one of the notable artists to emerge from the Magnolia and New Orleans.

Here at Nolazine, we were introduced to Neno Calvin and his cousin Tokey Hefner during the early days of their rap careers. At the time, their uncle Ceto was also making music and operating his Power & Money label. We had an opportunity to witness Neno’s journey from its early stages and watch him develop into the respected artist he is today.

Although Neno has connections to Cash Money and other powerful figures within New Orleans’ music scene, his longevity cannot be credited to relationships alone. He earned his position through hard work, a distinctive sound and his ability to keep his audience engaged. He has also expanded his reach by collaborating with nationally recognized artists such as Jacquees and G Herbo.

One of our favorite records from Neno Calvin that came out 7 years ago and is called “It’s Gon Cost You,” a song that captures the confidence and originality that have helped define his music. However, one record alone does not tell his entire story. Neno’s consistency has been one of the strongest parts of his career. Since getting started, he has continued releasing new material and frequently delivers five or more music videos each year.

In an industry where many artists disappear after a brief moment of attention, Neno Calvin has remained active and connected to his supporters. He did not wait for the industry to give him permission to succeed. Instead, he built his own foundation, established a loyal fan base and continued moving forward without compromising who he is.

Neno Calvin’s journey is proof that an independent artist can build something meaningful through patience, authenticity and consistent work. After more than a decade in the game, he still has not let up—and his supporters continue showing up for every chapter of his career.
