  • Tim Smooth: A Pioneer of New Orleans Hip-Hop

In the rich and storied history of New Orleans hip-hop , few names carry the reverence and respect that Tim Smooth  does. Born Timothy Smoot , the legendary emcee became a pivotal figure in the early 1990s rap scene, using his lyrical brilliance and genuine love for the craft to carve out a lane that would influence an entire generation of Southern hip-hop artists. Tim Smooth recently passed away at the age of 39  after a courageous battle with cancer. As the New Orleans community reflects on his life and legacy, one thing is clear— his impact runs deep . Early Beginnings & Local Fame A graduate of L.W. Higgins High School  in 1989, Tim Smooth didn’t waste any time before launching himself into music. Just two years later, he released his debut single, “I Gotsta’ Have It”  in 1991—a track that quickly became a local anthem . With a laid-back flow, clever wordplay, and undeniable charisma, Tim separated himself from the pack and became one of New Orleans’ most respected lyricists . By the time his albums Straight Up Drivin’ Em  (1994) and Da Franchise Player  (1998) dropped, Tim had already solidified his place as a cornerstone of New Orleans hip-hop , known to many as "the Knight from Kennedy Heights."  His sound resonated far beyond the Crescent City, landing him collaborations with Houston's Rap-A-Lot Records  and other independent labels. A Mentor and Inspiration to Many Tim Smooth’s influence wasn’t just musical—it was deeply personal. He played a significant role in the development of fellow NOLA rap legend Mystikal , who once said, “Had I never met Tim, I would be a totally different artist. He even co-wrote the title cut with me on 'Mind of Mystikal.' Thanks for the memories.” That kind of mentorship and collaborative spirit was a hallmark of Tim’s career. He was never just in it for himself—he uplifted others, sharing knowledge and encouragement with the next generation of artists trying to find their voice. A Fighter with a Smile Even in the face of hardship, Tim Smooth remained a source of light. As he battled cancer, those around him marveled at his unshakable positivity . His sister, Nicole Smoot , recalled, “He never had a fight in his whole life, and he was 39 years old. He was a happy person. He was always cracking jokes, and even with the cancer, he never didn't have a smile on his face.” Despite not having health insurance, the New Orleans community rallied behind him , organizing benefit events and donations to support him during his treatment—a testament to the love and respect he earned through years of giving back. The Final Chapter Tim Smooth’s final album, “The Invisible Man”  (2004), closed the book on a career that was rich with creativity, innovation, and purpose . Though his time in the spotlight may have been brief compared to some, the legacy he left behind is lasting. His work helped shape the blueprint for the New Orleans sound— before the bling, before the bounce, there was Tim Smooth . Gone But Never Forgotten More than just an artist, Tim Smooth was a symbol of resilience, talent, and community . A mentor, a friend, a pioneer—he left behind more than music; he left behind a legacy of love, humor, and hope . As New Orleans continues to evolve musically, Tim Smooth's contributions remain at its core. His name will forever echo in the streets he repped, in the verses he penned, and in the hearts of everyone he inspired. Rest in peace to the Knight from Kennedy Heights—Tim Smooth. • Stevie Wonder Owns 75% Of Coolio's Publishing For "Gangsta's Paradise"

When Coolio  released “Gangsta’s Paradise”  in 1995, it became an instant cultural phenomenon—topping charts, earning accolades, and embedding itself in hip-hop history. But what many fans don’t know is that the song’s success hinged on one crucial green light: the approval of Stevie Wonder . The haunting instrumental of “Gangsta’s Paradise”  is a direct sample of Wonder’s 1976 classic “Pastime Paradise.”  However, Wonder—known for his strong values and control over his art—initially refused to approve  Coolio’s early version of the track due to its explicit language . According to Paul Stewart , Coolio’s manager at the time, “The terms were a little harsh, but without them approving it, there’s no hit.” Coolio and his team revised the song, removing profanity  and cleaning up the lyrics out of respect for Wonder's wishes. The compromise worked. Stevie Wonder not only approved the revised version but also retained a 75% share of the publishing rights , making him a major beneficiary of the song’s massive success. And massive it was— “Gangsta’s Paradise”  was the top-selling single of 1995  in the United States and went on to win Coolio the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance . Its iconic placement in the film Dangerous Minds  further elevated its status, with Coolio's introspective lyrics resonating across generations. When Billboard revisited the legacy of “Gangsta’s Paradise”  following Coolio’s death in 2022 , the article emphasized how pivotal Stevie Wonder’s blessing was. What could have been just another sample-based track became a global anthem , thanks to a rare blend of musical genius, respect for artistry, and strategic compromise . In the end, “Gangsta’s Paradise”  stands as a powerful reminder that when legends collaborate—directly or indirectly— history is made .

  • The Complicated Love Story of Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier: A Nine-Year Affair of Passion, Pain, and Forgiveness

In the golden age of Hollywood, where glamour often masked emotional turmoil, two of the most iconic Black stars of the era— Diahann Carroll  and Sidney Poitier —shared a love story that was as complex as it was intense. Their relationship, which began in 1959 , lasted nearly a decade  and was marked by passion, betrayal, heartbreak, and ultimately, forgiveness. A Promise Made, A Promise Broken When Carroll and Poitier began their affair, both were married. Deeply in love, they made a pact to divorce their spouses  in order to be together. Poitier even went as far as to buy Carroll a ring  and an apartment for them to share. Diahann followed through with her end of the deal, divorcing her husband and preparing to start a new life with Sidney alongside her young daughter. But as the time came to make their shared dream a reality, Poitier suddenly changed course . According to Carroll’s 2008 memoir, The Legs Are the Last to Go , Poitier told her he didn’t want her daughter  living with them. He then changed the locks on the apartment  and demanded that she write him a check to cover the costs of purchase and decorating —a request she heartbreakingly complied with. “I did as I was told, submissive and desperate,”  Carroll recalled in her memoir. Possessiveness Without Commitment Despite refusing to leave his wife and breaking their pact, Poitier didn’t let go of his hold on Carroll easily. When she attempted to move on and date other men, his reaction turned volatile. She wrote that he became jealous and controlling, reportedly saying: “You bitch, whore, tramp. I know he just left your bed. I won’t have you running around with other men. You belong to me!” It was a twisted contradiction—Poitier didn’t want to commit to her fully, yet refused to see her with anyone else . From Pain to Peace In time, as both Carroll and Poitier grew older and gained distance from their turbulent romance, they found peace . Carroll eventually forgave him, and the two were able to rebuild a friendship  rooted in mutual respect and shared history. Poitier later acknowledged her brilliance and charm, saying: “As I got to know her, I realized she was one of the brightest women I had ever known.” Legacy Beyond Love Both Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier would go on to leave indelible marks on entertainment history—she as the first Black woman to star in her own primetime television series ( Julia ), and he as the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Their affair, while painful and deeply complicated, was a reflection of two powerful individuals navigating love, fame, and personal conflict in a world that rarely offered them space for emotional vulnerability. And though their romance didn’t end in the fairytale they once envisioned, it lives on as a poignant chapter  in the lives of two legends who dared to love boldly—even when it hurt.

In the heart of Algiers , one of New Orleans’ most storied neighborhoods, a young voice was rising from the streets—raw, real, and ready to make his mark. That voice belonged to Kenneth Jackson Jr. , known to the world as G-Slimm . Emerging in the early 1990s, G-Slimm quickly became a promising figure in the city's booming rap scene. But just as his career was poised to break through nationally, tragedy struck—cutting short a life and legacy that was only beginning to unfold. From Christopher Homes to Big Boy Records Raised in the Christopher Homes  housing development, G-Slimm’s journey into music began during his teenage years. In 1992, he caught the attention of Charles “Big Boy” Temple , the founder of Big Boy Records , a powerhouse in New Orleans hip-hop. G-Slimm joined a roster of rising stars that included Mystikal , Black Menace , and Partners-N-Crime , and began carving out a name of his own. On September 3, 1994 , G-Slimm released his debut album “Fours Deuces & Trays.”  With production from Leroy “Precise” Edwards  and features from Mystikal, the album embraced a West Coast-inspired G-funk sound , blending Southern grit with smooth, funk-heavy rhythms. Though it never charted nationally, it was heralded locally as one of the most acclaimed New Orleans rap albums of 1994 . A Star on the Rise In 1996, G-Slimm followed up with a self-titled album, further showcasing his lyrical talent and sonic versatility. His buzz caught the attention of Relativity Records , who had plans to reissue his debut with three additional tracks , signaling a national spotlight was on the horizon. He also contributed to Big Boy’s 1997 compilation “We G’s”  and appeared on Tim Smooth’s 1998 album “Da Franchise.”  G-Slimm was on the brink of crossing over—bringing Algiers to the forefront of Southern rap. A Tragic Ending But on October 13, 1996 , G-Slimm's rising star was extinguished. While walking with three friends to a local store in Algiers, they were ambushed by gunfire. G-Slimm was shot in the back and later died at Charity Hospital . He was just 22 years old . The motives surrounding his murder remain murky, but whispers of jealousy, street politics, and the dangers of newfound success continue to linger. His death left not only his family and friends grieving—but the entire New Orleans hip-hop community mourning what could have been. Legacy Lives On G-Slimm's influence still resonates throughout New Orleans. He was a bridge between the gritty realism of the South  and the sonic polish of West Coast rap , proving that the city had more to offer than just bounce music. Today, G-Slimm is remembered not just as a rapper—but as a symbol of potential, pain, and promise . His life and music remain a powerful reminder of the talent that rose from the streets of Algiers and the legacy of a young man whose voice still echoes through the city he loved. Gone too soon, but never forgotten—G-Slimm’s name lives on.

  • Jason Weaver And His Mother Turned Down $2 Million Dollars for The Original Lion King —And It Paid Off Big Time

In a move that would prove to be both bold and brilliant, Jason Weaver , the talented singer behind young Simba’s voice in Disney’s 1994 animated classic The Lion King , made a pivotal financial decision that continues to pay dividends nearly 30 years later. At just a young age, Weaver was offered a $2 million upfront payment  by Disney for his vocal performance, most notably on the film’s now-iconic track, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King.”  While that lump sum may have looked like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to many, Weaver’s mother had a different vision . Instead of taking the flat fee, she negotiated a deal for $100,000 upfront —along with a share of royalties  from the film's future profits. At the time, it was a gamble. Today, it's regarded as one of the smartest music deals in Hollywood history . Royalty Riches Over Time In interviews, Weaver has openly shared that the royalties have more than surpassed the original $2 million offer , particularly as The Lion King  evolved into one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time . The soundtrack, which achieved double-platinum status , remains a timeless piece of Disney’s legacy—meaning his contributions continue to generate income decades after the film’s release. A Lesson in Ownership and Foresight Weaver’s story is not just about money—it's a lesson in the value of long-term thinking and creative ownership . His mother’s foresight gave him a stake in one of the most iconic films of a generation, proving that sometimes the best deals are the ones that pay you forever . Today, Jason Weaver is celebrated not only for his vocals that helped bring Simba to life but also for the rare example of a child actor whose financial decisions—thanks to his mother’s wisdom—have stood the test of time. As The Lion King  continues to roar across generations, Jason Weaver’s voice and legacy remain front and center— a true king’s move in the world of entertainment.
