#NOLAZINE - When A Different World premiered in 1987, the Cosby Show spinoff centered on Lisa Bonet’s character, Denise Huxtable, as she adjusted to life at the fictional Hillman College. However, Bonet departed after the show’s first season when she became pregnant with her daughter, Zoë Kravitz.

New producer Debbie Allen reportedly suggested writing Bonet’s pregnancy into the series, believing a storyline about a pregnant college student could address an important real-life issue. Bill Cosby rejected the idea, arguing that Bonet could be pregnant but Denise Huxtable could not. The decision was made to remove Denise from Hillman rather than include the pregnancy. Bonet later returned to The Cosby Show, while A Different World was restructured around characters such as Whitley Gilbert, Dwayne Wayne, Jaleesa Vinson and Ron Johnson. Under Allen’s leadership, the show developed a stronger focus on authentic HBCU culture and eventually became one of the most influential Black television programs of its generation.

Although Lisa Bonet’s exit was unexpected, it ultimately changed the entire direction of A Different World and allowed its supporting characters to become television icons. Why Lisa Bonet Left A Different World After Only One Season
