Why Did 3LW Break Up? The Drama Behind One of the 2000s’ Most Popular R&B Girl Groups

#NOLAZINE - Do y'all remember 3LW? During the early 2000s, the R&B girl group had everybody singing along to hits like “No More (Baby I'ma Do Right),” “Playas Gon' Play,” and “I Do (Wanna Get Close to You).” But behind their success were disagreements, accusations, and internal drama that eventually changed the group's future.

Formed in 1999, 3LW originally consisted of Kiely Williams, Adrienne Bailon, and Naturi Naughton. The group gained national attention with its 2000 debut single “No More (Baby I'ma Do Right),” which became a major hit and helped its self-titled debut album achieve platinum certification.

However, things began falling apart in 2002 when Naturi Naughton was unexpectedly removed from the group.

Naughton later alleged that she experienced bullying, favoritism, and mistreatment while performing with 3LW. One of the most widely discussed incidents involved her claim that an argument with Kiely Williams escalated into Williams throwing a plate of food at her.

Williams has disputed aspects of Naughton's account, making the incident one of the group's most controversial moments.

Following Naughton's departure, 3LW continued as a duo before eventually recruiting Jessica Benson as its third member.

Although the group attempted to move forward, its momentum had already been affected by the controversy and lineup changes.

Meanwhile, Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams became involved in Disney's hugely successful The Cheetah Girls franchise, which introduced them to an even larger audience.

As their acting and music careers with The Cheetah Girls expanded, 3LW gradually became less active. The group eventually disbanded without releasing another studio album featuring its final lineup.

Naturi Naughton later rebuilt her career as an actress, gaining recognition for her roles in Notorious, Fame, and the hit television series Power, where she portrayed Tasha St. Patrick.

Adrienne Bailon also found success in television, eventually becoming a co-host of the daytime talk show The Real, while Kiely Williams continued working in entertainment.

Despite the drama surrounding their breakup, 3LW remains a memorable part of early 2000s R&B. Their music continues to bring back memories for fans who grew up during the era of girl groups, music videos, and teenage R&B stars.

What do y'all think? Could 3LW have become one of the biggest R&B girl groups of the 2000s if the original members had stayed together? And do you believe the group ended too soon?
