Why Did 3LW Break Up? The Drama Behind One of the 2000s’ Most Popular Girl Groups

#NOLAZINE - During the early 2000s, 3LW—short for “3 Little Women”—looked like they had everything needed to become one of R&B and pop music’s biggest girl groups.

The best-known original lineup featured Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams and Naturi Naughton. With songs like “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right)” and “Playas Gon’ Play,” 3LW quickly became fixtures of the TRL era. Their self-titled debut album was certified platinum, and the group toured alongside major acts. Wikipedia

But behind the success, serious problems were developing.

Eventually, allegations of mistreatment, disagreements with management, a now-infamous food altercation, lineup changes and the rise of The Cheetah Girls helped bring 3LW's original run to an end.

Naturi Naughton's Shocking Exit

The biggest turning point came in 2002, when Naturi Naughton suddenly left 3LW while the group was preparing to release its second album, A Girl Can Mack.

But whether she simply “left” became a major source of disagreement.

Naughton said she had actually been forced out of the group after ongoing conflicts involving the other members and management. Kiely Williams and Adrienne Bailon disputed parts of Naughton's version at the time, saying Naughton had been unhappy and denying that they had simply kicked her out. Wikipedia

Then came the incident that would follow 3LW for decades.

The Infamous KFC Incident

Naughton alleged that during a heated confrontation in 2002, an argument escalated and Kiely Williams threw food from KFC at her.

The story became one of the most infamous behind-the-scenes moments involving a 2000s girl group.

Williams initially disputed Naughton's characterization of events. Years later, she acknowledged that an incident involving the food occurred but challenged the idea that the commonly repeated version told the entire story. Entertainment Tonight

For Naughton, however, the confrontation represented something much bigger than an argument over food.

She has described her experience toward the end of her time in 3LW as deeply painful and has alleged that management wanted her removed from the group. MadameNoire

The competing accounts are important: not every detail of what happened behind closed doors has been agreed upon by the former members.

3LW Tried to Continue Without Naturi

Naughton's departure didn't immediately end 3LW.

Bailon and Williams temporarily continued as a duo before the group searched for another member. Teenager Jessica “J” Benson was eventually selected, restoring 3LW to a trio.

The new lineup continued performing and began working on another album. 3LW also left Epic Records and moved to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def. Chped

But recreating the momentum of the original trio proved difficult.

And another opportunity was becoming much bigger.

The Cheetah Girls Changed Everything

While 3LW was dealing with its internal problems, Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams landed roles alongside Raven-Symoné and Sabrina Bryan in Disney Channel's The Cheetah Girls.

The movie premiered in 2003 and became successful enough to develop into a larger music franchise.

Suddenly Bailon and Williams were balancing two girl-group identities: 3LW and The Cheetah Girls.

Although Bailon indicated at the time that both could coexist, The Cheetah Girls increasingly became a major focus for Bailon and Williams. Meanwhile, 3LW's planned next album—first associated with the title Phoenix Rising and later Point of No Return—suffered repeated delays. Chped

3LW Slowly Faded Away

Unlike the explosive departure of Naturi Naughton, the final ending of 3LW wasn't one dramatic moment.

The group attempted another comeback and released “Feelin' You” in 2006, but the song failed to make a major chart impact. Their planned album Point of No Return was ultimately shelved.

By then, Bailon and Williams' involvement with The Cheetah Girls had become much more prominent.

Years Later, Some of the Wounds Began to Heal

The story didn't completely end with bitterness.

In 2017, Adrienne Bailon and Naturi Naughton reunited publicly on The Real, where Bailon apologized for aspects of what happened during their 3LW years.

Years later, Bailon said she and Naughton had reached a much healthier place in their relationship. In 2024, she spoke about how meaningful it was that they could move beyond the “bad times” and create new memories as adults and mothers. People.com

Kiely Williams, however, has publicly maintained a different perspective on portions of the group's history and has challenged some of the allegations made about her and her family. Essence

So Why Did 3LW Really Break Up?

There wasn't just one reason.

The original lineup fractured because of serious personal and management conflicts culminating in Naturi Naughton's departure. The replacement lineup then struggled to regain the original group's momentum, their next album faced repeated delays, and Bailon and Williams became increasingly involved with the enormously successful Cheetah Girls franchise.

It was a combination of internal conflict, management disputes, lineup changes, stalled music and changing career opportunities.

That's what makes 3LW's story fascinating more than two decades later.

They weren't an unsuccessful group trying to make it.

They were already successful.

And just as 3LW appeared positioned to become an even bigger force in 2000s R&B and pop music, everything behind the scenes began falling apart.

Today, songs like “No More” and “Playas Gon' Play” remain reminders of what 3LW accomplished—and leave fans wondering just how big the original trio might have become had they stayed together.
