Whatever Happened to Cali Swag District? From “Teach Me How to Dougie” to Tragedy and a Group Forever Changed

#NOLAZINE - In 2010, it was almost impossible to attend a party, school dance or club without hearing “Teach Me How to Dougie.” The record turned Cali Swag District into one of hip-hop’s hottest new groups and helped take the Dougie dance from the streets to a worldwide audience.

Coming out of Inglewood, California, Cali Swag District consisted of Smoove Da General, Yung, M-Bone and JayAre. Their combination of West Coast energy, catchy records and dance culture made them stand out during an era when viral dances were beginning to become a major force in music.

For a moment, it looked like Cali Swag District had found the perfect formula for a long career.

Then tragedy changed everything.

“Teach Me How to Dougie” Takes Over

Cali Swag District exploded onto the national scene with “Teach Me How to Dougie.”

Released in 2010, the song became much bigger than just another rap single. The Dougie became a cultural phenomenon, with athletes, celebrities, children and fans across the country doing the dance.

The record reached the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually became certified Platinum multiple times, turning four young men from Inglewood into nationally recognized artists.

Cali Swag District followed the success with records including “Where You Are” and “Kickback,” while preparing their debut album.

Everything appeared to be moving in the right direction.

The Murder of M-Bone Changed Everything

On May 15, 2011, tragedy struck when group member M-Bone, whose real name was Montae Talbert, was shot and killed in Inglewood.

He was only 22 years old.

M-Bone was sitting inside a vehicle when he was attacked. His death devastated the group, their families and fans who had watched Cali Swag District rise over the previous year.

M-Bone was especially associated with the dancing and personality surrounding “Teach Me How to Dougie.” Losing him while the group was still trying to establish itself beyond its first massive hit created a void that could never truly be replaced.

The surviving members continued making music and honored their friend rather than immediately ending the group.

Cali Swag District Continued After M-Bone

Their debut studio album, The Kickback, was eventually released in 2011.

However, maintaining the momentum of “Teach Me How to Dougie” proved difficult. The music industry was changing quickly, and Cali Swag District was also attempting to move forward after losing one of its members.

They continued releasing music, including the 2014 project The District.

Then the group experienced another devastating loss.

JayAre Dies at Only 25

In June 2014, Cali Swag District member JayAre, born Cahron Childs, died at just 25 years old.

JayAre reportedly suffered from sickle cell disease and experienced serious health complications before his death.

Within approximately three years, Cali Swag District had lost half of its original four-member lineup.

M-Bone was gone at 22.

JayAre was gone at 25.

For a group that had entered the decade with so much energy and promise, the losses completely changed its future.

What Happened to the Remaining Members?

Following the deaths of M-Bone and JayAre, surviving members Smoove Da General and Yung continued with their lives and remained connected to music, but Cali Swag District never returned to the mainstream success they experienced during the “Dougie” era.

Their story became much bigger than simply being a group that had one huge record.

Cali Swag District experienced the type of tragedy that would be difficult for any group to overcome. Losing one member is devastating. Losing two members while everyone was still so young made their original four-man chemistry impossible to recreate.

Their Biggest Record Never Went Away

Although Cali Swag District's time at the top was brief, “Teach Me How to Dougie” never completely disappeared.

The song became one of the defining dance records of the early 2010s and remains instantly recognizable to a generation that remembers when the Dougie took over pop culture.

It also helped establish a blueprint that would become even more powerful with the growth of social media: create a catchy song connected to a dance and allow the audience to carry it across the world.

Years before TikTok dances routinely pushed songs onto the charts, Cali Swag District experienced the power of a dance becoming bigger than the record itself.

Whatever Happened to Cali Swag District?

Cali Swag District didn't simply disappear because people stopped listening.

Their journey was dramatically altered by tragedy.

At their peak, they were four young artists from Inglewood celebrating one of the biggest records in America. Within four years of their breakthrough, two members were dead.

Still, their contribution to hip-hop culture remains.

Whenever the opening of “Teach Me How to Dougie” comes on and people instinctively start doing the dance, Cali Swag District's legacy comes alive again.
