From Jay-Z Collaborations to Roc-A-Fella

Amil first gained major attention after appearing alongside Jay-Z and Ja Rule on “Can I Get A…” from Jay-Z’s 1998 album Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life. The record became a major hit and introduced Amil to millions of listeners.

She continued appearing on several Jay-Z records, including “Jigga What, Jigga Who,” “Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)” and “S. Carter.” Her Roc-A-Fella affiliation placed her around one of the hottest movements in hip-hop at the time.

In 2000, Amil released her debut album, All Money Is Legal, through Roc-A-Fella/Columbia.

But things didn't go according to plan.

Why Did Amil Leave Roc-A-Fella?

By the early 2000s, Amil was no longer part of Roc-A-Fella.

Over the years, different explanations circulated about why her relationship with the label ended. Amil herself later acknowledged that she wasn't completely prepared for everything that came with the music industry and that becoming a major recording artist wasn't necessarily something she had originally planned.
