Born Samuel Asghedom on March 4th, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, to DeWitt Asghedom and Angelique Smith, Blacc Sam's early years were shaped by the harsh realities of his environment. Growing up amidst gun violence, poverty, and gang culture in the Crenshaw District of South Central Los Angeles, he learned to navigate a world where survival often took precedence over everything else.
From a young age, Blacc Sam displayed a hustler mentality, engaging in various ventures to make ends meet. Whether it was distributing bootleg DVDs or controlling the California-Atlanta medicinal pipeline, he hustled hard, earning up to $700k annually in the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite the risks and challenges, Sam's entrepreneurial spirit drove him forward, determined to create a better life for himself and his loved ones.
As the older brother of Nipsey Hussle, Blacc Sam played a pivotal role in shaping his brother's trajectory while striving to set a positive example. Witnessing Nipsey's involvement in gang activity, Sam knew the importance of steering him towards a different path. Together, they embarked on a transformative trip to Eritrea and ventured into joint business endeavors, such as opening their first store, The Slauson Tees, in 2006. Through their partnership, Sam aimed to instill in Nipsey the values of hard work, resilience, and community empowerment.
Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations along the way, including arrests and business raids, Sam remained steadfast in his support of Nipsey's vision. The launch of the Marathon Store in 2017 marked a significant milestone in their journey, symbolizing their commitment to uplifting their community and providing opportunities for those who had been marginalized.
Following Nipsey's tragic death in 2019, Blacc Sam was faced with the daunting task of continuing his brother's legacy. Determined to honor Nipsey's memory, he expanded the Marathon brand, opening a second location and ensuring that Nipsey's children had ownership stakes in their real estate ventures. Through his actions, Blacc Sam embodied the principles of resilience, entrepreneurship, and community impact that were integral to Nipsey's vision.
The journey of Sam Asghedom is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. From humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration for his community, Sam's story serves as a reminder that no obstacle is insurmountable when fueled by passion, purpose, and a steadfast belief in one's ability to make a difference.
