Remembering Rapper Camoflauge: The Savannah Native Whose Legacy Lives On Through His Daughter Flau’jae Johnson

#NOLAZINE - Before Flau’jae Johnson became known across the country as a basketball star and recording artist, her father, Camoflauge, was building his own name in Southern hip-hop.

Born Jason Akeil Johnson, Camoflauge was a rapper from Savannah, Georgia, who developed a strong following throughout his hometown and surrounding areas. His life and career were tragically cut short in 2003, but more than two decades later, his name continues to live on—not only through his music, but through the success of his daughter, Flau’jae.

At Nolazine, we wanted to take a moment to remember Camoflauge and recognize the legacy he left behind.

Coming Out of Savannah, Georgia

Southern hip-hop has produced legendary movements from cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Houston and Miami, but Savannah has its own musical history as well.

Camoflauge became one of the artists who helped put Savannah's street rap scene on the map.

His music connected with listeners because of its rawness and authenticity. Instead of presenting a polished version of his environment, Camoflauge rapped from the perspective of someone who understood the realities surrounding him.

As his popularity grew, Camoflauge became more than another local rapper. He became an artist many people around Savannah believed had the potential to take the city's music scene to a much bigger level.

Building a Name in Southern Hip-Hop

Camoflauge released projects that helped establish his reputation, including I Represent, Strictly 4 da Streets: Drugs Sex and Violence, Vol. 1 and Keepin It Real.

His regional popularity eventually brought him greater attention within the music industry. Camoflauge became associated with Universal Records, giving him an opportunity to potentially take his music beyond the independent Southern market.

For an artist coming out of Savannah during that period, it represented a major accomplishment.

Southern rap was becoming increasingly powerful nationally, and Camoflauge appeared positioned to become one of the artists representing Savannah during that expansion.

Unfortunately, he would never get the opportunity to see how far his career could go.

Camoflauge's Life Was Tragically Cut Short

On May 19, 2003, Camoflauge was fatally shot outside a recording studio in Savannah. He was only 21 years old.

His death devastated his family, friends, fans and the Savannah music community.

The tragedy became even more heartbreaking because Camoflauge's daughter, Flau’jae Johnson, was born months after his death.

She never had the opportunity to personally know her father.

But she would grow up knowing his story.

Flau’jae Johnson Carries Her Father's Legacy

Years later, millions of people would learn the Johnson family name through Flau’jae.

Flau’jae developed two major talents of her own: basketball and music.

As a young rapper, she began receiving national attention through television appearances and performances. She competed on The Rap Game and later appeared on America's Got Talent, introducing herself to audiences not simply as an aspiring artist, but as the daughter of Camoflauge.

She continued pursuing music while also developing into an elite basketball player.

Her basketball talent eventually took her to LSU, where she became part of the Tigers' 2023 NCAA women's basketball national championship team.

That accomplishment put Flau’jae on one of the biggest stages in women's college basketball.

Her profile has continued to grow through basketball, music, endorsements and entertainment, making her one of the most recognizable young athletes balancing sports and a serious recording career.

More Than Just a Famous Athlete's Father

As Flau’jae's fame has grown, younger fans may first learn about Camoflauge simply because he was her father.

But his story deserves to be remembered independently as well.

Camoflauge was building something of his own before Flau’jae was born.

He was an emerging Southern rapper with a loyal fan base and aspirations of taking Savannah with him to the national stage. His story represents another example of a talented young artist whose potential can never fully be measured because his life ended before his career had a chance to reach its peak.

That is what makes his story both inspiring and heartbreaking.

We know what Camoflauge accomplished.

We'll never know everything he could have accomplished.

For longtime supporters, Camoflauge will always be remembered as one of Savannah's own.

More than two decades after Camoflauge's death, his story has reached a generation of people who weren't even alive when he was making music.
