JT Money: The Rap Legend from Miami

Jeffrey Jermaine Thompkins, better known by his stage name JT Money, is a name etched in the annals of hip-hop history. As the leader of the Miami-based hip-hop group Poison Clan, Thompkins rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, leaving an indelible mark on the rap scene with his raw lyricism and unapologetic style.

Thompkins' journey into the world of rap began as a protégé of Luther "Luke" Campbell, the influential figure behind Luke Records. Discovered by Luke Skyywalker of the 2 Live Crew at a Miami talent show, JT Money, along with his partner Debonaire, was signed to Luke Records as part of the group Poison Clan in 1990.

Under the Poison Clan moniker, JT Money unleashed a series of albums that showcased his lyrical prowess and street-smart swagger. The group's sophomore album, "Poisonous Mentality," featured the hit single "Shake What Ya Mama Gave Ya," earning acclaim from critics and fans alike. Their tracks, including "Action," "Bad Influence," and "Don't Sleep On A Hizzo," solidified Poison Clan's status as a force to be reckoned with in the rap game.

In 1999, JT Money embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album "Pimpin' On Wax." Shedding the Poison Clan name, Thompkins delivered a record that would catapult him to mainstream success. The album's lead single, "Who Dat," featuring Solé, soared to the top of the charts, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning him the Top Rap Single at the 1999 Billboard Music Awards.

Despite the commercial success of his solo debut, JT Money's subsequent albums did not reach the same heights. However, his impact on the rap landscape remained undeniable, with his contributions to the genre celebrated by fans and fellow artists alike.

Today, JT Money's legacy continues to resonate, serving as a testament to his influence and talent as a rapper. With his fearless approach to storytelling and his ability to capture the essence of street life, JT Money remains a revered figure in hip-hop, inspiring a new generation of artists to push boundaries and carve out their own path in the industry.
