#NOLAZINE - During the late 1990s, Master P was already one of the most powerful entrepreneurs in hip-hop. The New Orleans native had built No Limit Records into a multimillion-dollar empire, but music wasn't his only ambition. He wanted to bring his business mindset into professional sports.

In 1999, Master P made headlines when his sports management company, No Limit Sports, represented Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ricky Williams as he entered the NFL Draft.

Williams was one of the most talented college football players in the country after a legendary career at the University of Texas. The New Orleans Saints selected him fifth overall in the 1999 NFL Draft, making him one of the biggest names entering professional football.

However, the contract negotiated by Master P's sports management operation quickly became one of the most controversial rookie deals in NFL history.

Williams signed an eight-year contract worth a potential $68.4 million, but only about $8.8 million was guaranteed through his signing bonus. Much of the remaining money depended on difficult performance incentives, leaving Williams with considerably less financial security than many other top draft picks.

The deal sparked criticism from sports agents, analysts, and NFL insiders who questioned whether a successful music mogul could effectively navigate the complicated world of professional sports contracts.

Williams eventually parted ways with No Limit Sports and hired a different agent.

Despite the controversy, Master P's move into sports management demonstrated that his ambitions extended far beyond selling records. He was attempting to build a business empire that connected entertainment, athletics, and entrepreneurship.

Years later, the Ricky Williams contract remains one of the most talked-about examples of a hip-hop mogul entering the professional sports industry.

For Master P, it was another chapter in his journey from the streets of New Orleans to becoming one of hip-hop's most recognizable businessmen.
