#NOLAZINE – History has officially been made in American politics! For the first time in United States history, five Black governors have won elections during the same midterm election cycle, setting a historic record for African American representation in state leadership.

The groundbreaking victories in the November 3, 2026, elections include Keisha Lance Bottoms of Georgia, Byron Donalds of Florida, Wes Moore of Maryland, David Crowley of Wisconsin, and Aaron Ford of Nevada.

The election marks several historic firsts. Bottoms becomes the first Black woman elected governor in American history, while Donalds becomes the first Black Republican elected governor. Crowley makes history as Wisconsin’s first Black governor, and Ford becomes Nevada’s first Black governor. Meanwhile, Moore secured reelection in Maryland.

Before the 2026 elections, only three Black Americans had ever been elected governor in U.S. history: Douglas Wilder of Virginia, Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, and Wes Moore of Maryland.

Now, five Black governors are projected to serve simultaneously for the first time, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties.

The historic election represents a major milestone in American political history and a new chapter for Black representation in government.
