#NOLAZINE - In one of the most unbelievable chapters of New Orleans organized crime history, notorious Mafia boss Carlos Marcello was forcibly removed from the United States in 1961 and sent to Guatemala, only to eventually find his way back to Louisiana.

By the early 1960s, Marcello had become one of the most powerful organized crime figures in the South, with alleged influence over gambling operations, businesses, politicians, and law enforcement.

However, his criminal reputation had attracted the attention of the Kennedy administration.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was determined to remove Marcello from the United States, believing his deportation would weaken organized crime in Louisiana.

In April 1961, federal immigration authorities detained Marcello and abruptly deported him to Guatemala, a Central American country where officials claimed he held citizenship.

Marcello, who was born in Tunisia to Sicilian parents, had spent most of his life in Louisiana and disputed the circumstances surrounding his removal.

According to historical accounts, Guatemalan authorities eventually expelled him, leaving him stranded near the border with Honduras. Marcello later described enduring difficult conditions while attempting to return to the United States.

But the government's plan didn't work as intended.

Despite being deported thousands of miles away, Marcello eventually returned to New Orleans, where he continued fighting federal authorities and remained a major figure in Louisiana's underworld.

His return became another chapter in his long-running conflict with the Kennedy administration.

The story demonstrated just how difficult federal officials found it to permanently remove a deeply connected organized crime figure from the country.

Imagine being forcibly sent to another country, left stranded, and still finding your way back home.

Did you know Carlos Marcello was deported to Guatemala in 1961? And do you think his return to New Orleans was one of the most remarkable episodes in American Mafia history?
