Her journey from a young girl in Windsor to a celebrated singer-songwriter is a testament to her resilience and dedication to her craft.

Early Beginnings and Discovery

Tamia's musical journey began in her hometown of Windsor, where she was raised by her mother, Barbara Washington-Peden, alongside her three younger brothers. From an early age, Tamia was immersed in a world of diverse musical influences, performing in local church choirs and participating in singing and dancing competitions. By age 12, she was already involved in musical theater, which helped her hone her vocal skills under the guidance of Windsor musician Eugene Davis.

Her big break came in 1994 when she performed at a multiple sclerosis benefit in Aspen, Colorado. This performance caught the attention of Brenda Richie, ex-wife of Lionel Richie, who was impressed by Tamia's talent. This chance encounter led to a management deal with Richie and eventually caught the eye of legendary producer Quincy Jones.
